Academic Program (Academy) Children in fifth and sixth grades may apply for the following classes, in addition to, or separate from, the Enrichment Program. The following classes are available: Fifth Grade - Writing and Grammar 5 (Saxon). This is the first course (two worktexts, one for grammar and one for writing) in an excellent four-year curriculum sequence which will provide you with the assurance that your child has mastered the grammar concepts necessary for speaking and writing correctly. The grammar curriculum provides for continuous review of skills, and the writing curriculum is well-designed in thirty-one lessons, covering not only the sentence and the paragraph, but also the construction of a good essay. These skills are incorporated into lessons which help the student develop the following types of essays: persuasive, expository, personal narrative, descriptive, chapter summary, imaginative story, and short story summary. Good writing takes practice, and the four-year sequence of the Saxon Writing and Grammar program helps young writers continue to develop good lifelong writing skills. Wednesday, 8:00 - 9:15.
