OUR NINETEENTH YEAR In 1992, Marsha Rohe opened Horizons in order to provide enrichment classes for homeschoolers, including her own three children. Since that time, hundreds of students in first through sixth grades have enjoyed a variety of classes in the Wednesday Enrichment program. Art, Drama, Science with Science Lab, P.E., Geography, and Beginning Sign Language will be part of the Wednesday program for 2010 - 2011. Elementary students enjoy a Christmas party, Valentine's party, Pizza Days, Field Day, a Spring program, and other activities. The Horizons Elementary Academy began in 2002. The 1010 - 2011 Academy will be available for third and fourth, and fifth and sixth grades and includes language arts and math. Academy classes meet once weekly. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders may participate in Wednesday Enrichment, the Academy, or both. The secondary program (seventh-twelfth grades) at Horizons offers dedicated and capable students an opportunity to enroll in core and elective subjects. Students may qualify for a transcript and high school diploma from Horizons Education Center after successfully completing a required core block of classes (Academy), or they may choose to enroll in one or more core or elective classes to help complete a homeschool transcript. Horizons students will be expected to complete homework assignments, verify progress with achievement testing, and adhere to school policies. Graduates have been offered admission to various universities including Texas A&M, Baylor, Rice, MIT, Johns Hopkins, UT Dallas, Houston Baptist, and Sam Houston. The program at Horizons Education Center is designed to offer classroom as well as testing opportunities. The Horizons Academy hopes to challenge students to achieve academically, think creatively, lead wisely, and desire Christlikeness in each of these worthwhile pursuits. Ms. Rohe has a lifetime Texas Teacher Certificate with endorsements in Elementary Education, Education of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, and Speech Therapy. She has passed the Texas ExCet Exams for both English Language Arts and Reading 8-12, and History 8-12. A lifelong learner, Ms. Rohe is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M. She has completed 15 hours. Horizons is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Champion Forest and Louetta, two miles east of SH249. For over eighteen years at this location, Horizons has served families from communities in the northwest Houston area including Cy-Fair, Tomball, Klein, Spring, Magnolia, Hockley, Aldine, and The Woodlands. |
